The Making of the First-Ever Collection
of Interiors by Louis I. Kahn

Louis-Kahn-Monumental-Modernism

During Milan Design Week 2023, Form Portfolios, dedicated to building legacies for historic and contemporary designers, announces a partnership to develop the first-ever collections of interior design by Louis I. Kahn (1901-1974). Kahn's work has inspired generations of architects, and his legacy continues to shape the field of architecture today. Renowned for his visionary and poetic approach to design, he envisioned and realized such landmark buildings as the Salk Institute, the Kimbell Art Museum, and Yale University Art Gallery to become one of the most important American modernist architects of the 20th-century.

“Form Portfolios is honored to collaborate with Kahn’s grandson, architect/designer Gregory Kahn Melitonov, to celebrate the legacy of one of America’s greatest architects. Our team, alongside Louis Kahn’s daughter Sue Ann Kahn, is researching lesser known works from his outstanding life in design,” explains Mark Masiello, Founder, Form Portfolios. “The beginning phase has been an extraordinary discovery and we look forward to bringing the first Louis I. Kahn furniture and lighting collection to design enthusiasts around the world. Our intention is to launch the first ever Kahn interior collection in partnership with a world-class design brand.”

The architectural works of Louis Kahn, unmistakable in their philosophy and construction, are celebrated monuments of modernist architecture. Often evoking a sense of spiritual transcendence, the interiors of his buildings are timeless studies in space and geometry and include furnishing and build-ins rarely publicized. He was a master of material and became known as the architect of light, all of which will be essential elements in the ongoing creative process of developing his interior designs.

“My father was an artist and a visionary known for his iconic and monumental buildings, but no detail was too small for his attention. The details, in his view, were an essential part of his architecture. We are pleased to partner with Form Portfolios to unveil and develop the potential of his smaller scale works to fully honor and expand his legacy,” stated Sue Ann, Kahn’s daughter.
