Renowned Architecture and Design Firm to Bring its Modern Classics to the Market for the First Time
Form Portfolios, a design firm that owns and manages the work of designers and elevates their legacies, announces a multi-year collaboration with leading architecture, engineering, and interiors firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) to pursue partnerships to introduce its modern classics furniture and lighting designs.
For nine decades, SOM has been renowned for designing some of the world’s most innovative buildings and interiors—including Lever House (1952), Connecticut General Life Insurance Company Headquarters (1957), Weyerhaeuser Corporate Headquarters (1971), Terrace Plaza Hotel (1948), Wilis Tower (formerly Sears Tower) (1974), Burj Khalifa (2009), and One World Trade Center (2014). SOM is now poised to make its bespoke furniture, lighting and other product designs available for the first time to the interior design market.
“Interior design has long been a critical expression of the total environments that define so many of SOM’s architectural masterpieces. Countless great architects and designers created their best work while at SOM. A portfolio of portfolios, the works represent a profound history of design, and we are delighted to be entrusted in bringing this next chapter of the SOM design legacy forward,” said Mark Masiello, the Founder and CEO of Form Portfolios.
SOM is known not only for its skyline-defining feats of architecture and engineering, but also for its legacy of working in large, collaborative teams to design at all scales, from towers to objects. Form Portfolios will draw upon SOM’s archive, including delving into projects by notable architects such as Gordon Bunshaft, Walter Netsch, Davis Allen, Charles Pfister, and Natalie Dubois.
“The SOM archives are filled with extraordinary, bespoke designs created through our storied interior design practice and for the buildings we have authored since the founding of our firm. We are delighted to partner with Form Portfolios to celebrate our rich legacy by making our designs available to the wider market,” stated SOM Partner Julia Murphy.
